In a bombshell letter to the CEO of ICANN sent today by Senator Jay Rockefeller, head  of the Senate Commerce Committee he told  telling ICANN to “tread carefully” in opening up new gTLD’s follow GAC advice and consider a limited roll out of first round gTLD’s:

“ICANN should fully consider and act upon the  GAC safeguard advice.

“ICANN should consider a limited first round of new gTLD’s to allow for an effective one year review as required by ICANN’s Affirmation of Commitments with the Department of Commerce.”

“This review will  be critical to adequately gauging the impact of the expansion of Internet Users who are ultimately ICANN great stakeholders.”

Saw that via @stepvg earlier this morning. After watching this process unfold for many years, I’ve come to the conclusion that letters like this don’t really cause a ruckus.

    Andrew

I would rather just present news and developments and let readers decide for themselves whether its going to cause a “ruckus” is not

You imply it’s a big issue by saying it’s a bombshell letter. I’m just giving my opinion that it won’t amount to much.

“letters like this don’t really cause a ruckus.”

    – and neither will the new non.com’s.

But the real point I see is with all the problems with exposed government corruption these days – and no doubt more to come – ICANN will likely be in that same fold
