    I don’t understand this purchase…

I think the majority of English speakers will hear/type “BUTT” …

    What I am missing?

Yes, it’s a LLL.com, it’s a dictionary word, but I don’t see any particular commercial value in it.

    I am with domo.
another example is teeshirts.com that just sold for $42K I think – where the misspell or slang is T-Shirts is the way everybody spells it.
I would say the seller got the deal in this one for But.com

First it’s a catchy short brandable.

For example BUT has hundred stores in France (and maybe Europe): http://www.but.fr

Plus in French it has a descriptive, “but” means “goal”.

in the USA is neither one.

    INDISTINGUISHABLE from BUTT = Derriere

Nobody in the right mind will use it as a brand.

and the french prefer their Country Code…isn’t?

    The facts are that
    1) But is an important brand in France, and the company is very successful. Nobody in France cares about the confusion with an english name like butt which is completely unknown in France. You could have the same problem using the words “pine” or “bite” that both mean “dick” in french !! and who cares?
    2) but means goal in french, and how much would you pay for goal.com ???
    3) dot COM in France is much more valuable than dot FR, and most users like to control both COM and FR
So François is right, it’s a very valuable domain. There is a life out of the States, and also for domains !
