Social.Org Sells For $228K

March 23, 2012 by Michael Berkens

Social.org just sold on NameJet.com for $228,600

Social.com sold last year for $2.6 Million Dollars making it the highest priced domain sale of 2011.

This sale on NameJet.com represents a little under 10% of the .com sales price which seems just about right.

There were 21 bidders willing to pay $10K or more for the domain, 13 willing to pay $20K or more, 5 willing to pay $50K or more – and then the bidding came down to 3 bidders who were into the six figures.

A total of 415 bidders signed up for the heavily promoted auction.

The final winning bid of $228,600 was made by a user going under the id “qgpfexzorg”

Wow, great sale! I think this puts it #2 all-time for .org behind Poker.org for $1 million, correct?

    @ Steve:

Blackjack.org quietly sold for $298,000 to the owner of Poker.org according to DNjournal (announced 3 years after the fact):

Now the waiting game to see if Salesforce was the buyer of the .org!

Interesting way of breaking that down, a good way to look at those buyers funding and industry at a whole.

Oh wow; and with a “CPC average” of ~$34.00 In regards to autoinsurance.org going for $440,000! It’s always fun to see where they end up.

Where is Social.com right now? It’s lost, no server found. 🙂
    Makes you think..

Some investors believe they will need the .COM .NET and .ORG versions of their gTLD to sweep the voting/scoring for .SOCIAL

Others believe that the .ORG will be dropped and all .ORG domains will ascend to the gTLD altars of the DNS clerics.

Then there are those that think they have bought .SOCIAL for $185,000 🙂

    Thanks for playing !!

Yep, a great sale for sure.

For this name ‘though, I actually prefer the ‘hack’, soci.al,
that sold for around $50,000 some months ago.

Good luck to the buyer, and congrats to the seller!

    🙂

“Michael, youre saying $69 bid never won?”

Gosh – I even forgot to even put in a $69 backorder – because it is not even worth that – in the “Real World”

Nice sale. Arguably a little light in the price.

Don’t wet your pants if you’re holding .Org domains. Only a select few of the millions of .Org domains are equals to this sale. I hold more than a few of the few. :p, :-/ & 😉

If you want to grasp the valuation or get your head around what it takes to extract the value of an industry defining/grade .Org domain take a look at SocialMedia.org (not mine). It is not being run as a non-profit. It is being developed as an “industry organization/organizer”. Membership fees, conferences, consulting services, etc.

Social.org is brilliant start for an online enterprise built around “social” but, whatever comes of the domain, it still has to compete based upon a whole lot more than it’s street address. There better be a few more million in the bank for development, promotion, staff, maint., etc. At this price I suspect there will be.

Nice sale – I wonder what Social.TV is worth?

  19. Niedermeyer says

    March 24, 2012 at 10:56 am

    @soc.tv,

based on this latest social.org sale; i’d say social.tv is probably worth around $80,000-$120,000 to an enduser

    This is too much IMO.

  21. Sid says

    March 24, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Yes, Sameh. TrendMonkey.com is worth $9,999, but this is too much for Social.org. Give me a break…

  22. Amr says

    March 24, 2012 at 7:28 pm

I agree with sameh, this is too much.

  23. Back in the real World says

    March 24, 2012 at 7:54 pm

    Too much for who?

Have you ever walked into a house and thought I must buy this house?

The saying goes that something is worth what someone else is willing to pay and 3 people went right upto this purchase price.

$250,000 may seem like a large amount of money but its all relative? There are super yachts these days that wouldnt be a third full of fuel on $250,000.

If someone is starting a real business on the domain the cost is nothing.

    Niedermayer and Soc.TV

I’d say based on this sale the value of Social.TV just changed 0% so what it was worth before

    MobileWallet.net

I’d say based on this sale the value of Social.Net just changed 0% so what it was worth before

  28. sharon says

    July 16, 2012 at 11:38 am

I don’t think it’s worth that much but if someone is willing to pay I guess it maybe worth it, I just don’t understand what are they going to do with it to justify that price.

  29. www.tl says

    July 16, 2012 at 12:44 pm

    @Sharon

Your post is very timely, Sharon, because social.org is going
through Namejet.com yet again and is currently at $8,100 with
    just 10 hours to go…

Kinda makes you scratch your head at the (claimed) $228,000
    sale figure doesn’t it!

and Opposites.com is back in auction for the 47th time this year as well because it only gets to $6K and does not meet the reserve. Actually it is in for the 3rd time.
