.Pro Special Godaddy Auction Ends Tuesday & Over 100 Domains Have Bids

January 16, 2012 by Michael Berkens

Tomorrow the .Pro auction of registry owned domain names closes on Godaddy.com.

The auction closes at 9PM PST on Tuesday January 17th

I would bet this is the 1st time most of you are even hearing about the auction which hasn’t received a whole lot of promotion

However out of the 160 or so domains in the auction over 100 have a least one bid.

App.Pro is leading the way so far with 75 bids and a high bid of around $1,800 as of publication.

Included in the auction are some one letter .Pro domains and 1 numbered .Pro domains but with a reserve of something over $5K on these (there are some with $5K bids but reserve has not been met) not sure if any will sell.

What are renewal fees on .pro, average consumer has no idea about this extension, great vanity ownership for a domainer though.

I’ve an interesting suggestion of a .pro domain (not in this list) that you should buy and that seems still owned by the .pro registry (email me to know more) 🙂

  3. professional domains says

.Pro is a slow growth story as the registry has done minimal marketing (I’m guessing for budget reasons) but each month the registry keeps growing with it being popular also internationally with ownership for Russian and French keywords.

Professional are you with the .Pro registry?

  5. professional domains says

No, I’m independent and have been following and buying into this extension for last several years.

    January 16, 2012 at 1:32 pm

well maybe you can answer Ron above what are the renewal fees for a .pro?

  7. professional domains says

    January 16, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Very inexpensive right now. The registry has been having .pro’s on first year promo as low as 2.99 to 5.95 first year renewals with annual renewals after that any where from 12.95 to 14.95.
Overall, the pricing is very competitive.

  8. professional domains says

    January 16, 2012 at 1:43 pm

pricing depends on what registrar you go to.

  9. Charles Lowe says

I stick with EnCirca. But there are dozens and dozens of Pro registrars to choose from. EnCirca has been running specials on reg fees and have been as low as $2.99 for the past few months Their renewal fee has been $14.95 for quite some time now.

    Pro Factoid:
The word “Pro” is used in over 1750 dictionary words and two-word combinations.

I am not very familiar with .pro but it seems to be a very brandable extension, will be interesting to see how these auctions shape up. I am going to dig deeper for some $5.95 buys, I’d bet there are a lot of winners available.

I need to get my site going so I can start flipping some of this stuff!

There does seem to be a steady growth with the extension, though more interest outside the U.S. at present. I’ve got a couple hundred .pros and gotten offers for as much as $15,000 and know there have been sales greater than that to date which is promising. Personally, I feel .pro has a much wider appeal and practical functionality than any of the new extensions coming out (or proposed). We’ll see what happens, but I might be still be scratching my head about this a couple of years from now.

    January 16, 2012 at 11:27 pm

i dont think this tld has been given the all clear to be a gtld, it has always been a sponsored tld- unless someone can show me where- i like the tld, but it seems to have morphed into a “wink wink” gtld – i guess it’s a matter of having professional qualifications requirements when it comes to icann, but saying they wont enforce- im surprised theres no disclosure either way on the auction.

    encirca says
The professional data required upon registration is reduced to only the type of licensed profession.

your asked to click you agree to .pro rules- it seems a litle slippery to me, good value but lack of clarity on the exact rules – ie it seems they encourage you to lie about your representaion..

  13. Professional Domains says

    January 17, 2012 at 2:16 am

I’d recommend having a business license, or professional license even though it is self certify since you are just asked one question which is what is your profession. After the registry announced pro 2.0 live on Nov. 17’th last year, it freed up the transfer of .pro domains so I can now be easily transferred between registrars plus allowed for instant activation of the domains directly after purchase.

I do wonder what effect the new domain program will have on registries like .pro and .travel since I doubt new domain extensions will have any restrictions. But, I guess we’ll see how that plays out over the next year or so. I know many .pro domainers would like to see these restrictions removed.

But on the other hand many companies and individuals can obtain a business license, so I hardly think this is a big deal for anyone in business to own these domains.

    xxx.pro came in at ….. $18,800

Just recently caught wind of business.pro getting triggered and hitting sedo’s auction block and currently sits at 4,500 USD. This and 2 other domains rise.pro and communications.pro are now listed for auction also. I’d say the GoDaddy auction was helpful in raising awareness of this extension. Again, i don’ t own any of these domains but follow the news.

  22. Charles says

    February 14, 2012 at 4:50 pm

As noted above, Afilias acquired the .Pro Registry just prior to the auction beginning. I don’t have anything to add to that except that now maybe we’ll get some marketing and promotion which has until now been non-existent.

FYI … I have been buying into Pro for about three years. I own 240 at the moment and it only took a hand full of sales to put me in the Black.

Facts.pro and Total.pro are two privately owned sites that are loaded with good information. Sail.pro is also privately owned and a beautiful example of a Pro site.
