PCWorld Names New gTLD’s As One Of “Top 5 Major Changes Facing The Internet”

January 3, 2012 by Michael Berkens

PCWorld.com just published an article entitled the “Top 5 Major Changes Facing The Internet” in 2012.

The article starts off saying:

“2012 is poised to go down in Internet history as one of the most significant 12-month periods from both a technical and policy perspective since the late 1990’s”

Number 3 on the list is the new gTLD program that is opening up shortly on January 12th for applications.

As for the new gTLD program PCWorld writes:

“”3. Up to 1,000 new top-level domains will start being introduced.”

“”ICANN plans to launch a new program Jan. 12 to add hundreds of generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .hotel and .paris to the Internet.””

“This controversial plan has been under discussion for six years, and it is finally scheduled to begin. ICANN’s new gTLD program represents the biggest change to the Internet’s naming system since 1998, when ICANN was formed.”

“If ICANN’s latest attempt to expand the domain name space succeeds, it could fundamentally change the way domain names are used.”

“Among the new categories of names that are expected to be approved include: internationalized domain names in non-English language scripts; geographically oriented domains for cities and regions; domain names tied to specific interests as well as domain names tied to individual companies and brands.”

Also mentioned in the top 5 is that Verisign contract to run the .com registry is up for renewal in late 2012.  However if the ICANN treats the renewal of the .com contract with Verisign the same as it did with the .net contract this year, it will be a rubber stamp.

The market will decide what becomes popular, as has happened with any top level domain launch until now. No one can predict the impact, but personally I believe that in 5-10 years these top level domains will be the preferred short-cut for savvy users, and .com could become a dinosaur

Companies with the higher budgets will control/squat on the most desirable domain extensions skewing the serp results yet again. Way to tilt the .com playing field ICANN.

    Christopher, European Domain Centre :
“and .com could become a dinosaur”

That is advise you can take right to the Bank (ruptcy)

There is no right of the dot and left of the dot – it is “.com” – not “com” that is right of the dot.

“.com” – not “com” is the only brand of the Internet.

But thank for the entertainment friend

    Yeah right.

Crappy alternatives do not lower the value of premium assets.

800 numbers were not lowered in value by 877, 866,855.

Houses on the beach were not lowered in value by suburbs.

.COM has a history and credibility that other extensions never will.

Brings up link to PCWorld.com, adds thedomains.com to my block list of news sites in google news.

Hey if your going to post anything deemed news, don’t just go and re-post info that’s already available on another site.

    Stop

A LOT of people would never see these stories unless someone in the domain industry pointed them out.

We also just don’t repost the story but add our own comments to it

We “repost” a lot more stories on our facebook page.
