Check Out The Guy Who Is Using A Six Figure Domain For His LinkedIn Page

August 25, 2011 by Michael Berkens

As domainers we have seen a lot of great domains used pretty strange ways.

Lets add the domain name SEC.com to that list

Without a doubt SEC.com is a six figure, if not a seven figure domain name.

SEC stands for among other things the Security and Exchange Commission and the Southeastern Conference.

If you check out the site it goes directly to a Linked In page for Brendan Reilly.

Mr. Reilly is a “Trader & Financial Modeler”

The domain name is registered to Software Editing Corporation of Wilmington Delaware and its administrative contact is Mr. Reilly.

The domain has a Google PR of 4, an Alexa rank of 1.4M and gets according to Compete.com gets between 4K and 13K visitors a month.

So what do you think of the use of the domain name for a Linkedin Page?

It’s a nice name, no doubt but highest and best use would be what, how would you justify such value and not infringe?

I see it as maybe a 7 figure. My buddy’s uncle has FDA.com which is similar issue and he turned down low 7 figures. SEC.com could be Securities Exchange Commission as FDA is Food Drug Administration.

SEC.com is at least a 7 figure name…perhaps 8 figures if the SEC and the SEC network come calling.

$250K – gov does not have that kind of money and if they did they would need congressional approval – seriously – they will need SEC.gov.

Sports conference – with all the scrutiny anf marketing “infringements” – otherwise known as table dances – never a big number.

All in All – that is why it is used as it is.

    LLL s

are clearly worth the value of its weight of every penny of its price in gold.

It’s definitely a seven figure name. He could easily sell it to a foreign company and avoid any potential U.S. trademark violations.

maybe he does it to avoid trademark hassles ?

Not that I visit it very often, but I always thought lse.co.uk was affiliated with the London Stock Exchange. Never noticed the “London South East” hack in the logo until recently. The real LSE uses a .com.

“SEC.com is at least a 7 figure name”

if the SEC does not want it assigned for free…

I think it is very smart what he is doing with instant credibility. The value of the domain has no bearing. What he is doing with it is what counts. He is targeting the folks of interest. Very smart and very effective. It give me an idea. 😉

    LMAO @ the dreamers

As usual the fantasists & dreamers come out of the woodwork with their uncles & whatnot who received 7 figures for such & such a name…

I would think the owner is a lot smarter than you schmucks give him credit for

No doubt the domain is being watched daily by sec.gov
He puts any content in any way infringing & they will be on him with a UDRP – and he can kiss it goodbye

ps. never listen to anyone who links his domain to a shitty domain.
You can tell a lot by the (quality of) domains someone is associated with..

I actually think this is pretty smart. If he parked it he’d have either the U.S. government or the SEC sports conference on his tail.

If I remember correctly, sec.com was once owned by the same guy as dns.com (before Tihan bought dns.com).

I don’t think it’s the same guy as the current registrant and I know the original guy wasn’t selling cheap, so he probably paid xxx,xxx for it.

Great idea because he does not have to pay for hosting and any site development.

When Rick Schwartz says it is a great idea, it is a great idea.

The domain is no longer directing. At least not where I am from.

    Any clues why?

I guess he read this article and realized that he can put this domain to a better use and stopped the redirection.

Obama can ask the Fed to print 10 mil to buy it for SEC,who cares now after trillions of freshly printed paper
