Next Seven Figure Sale? Dragon.com Hits the Market

July 21, 2011 by Michael Berkens

I just received an email from the owner of  Dragon.com who has put it up for sale.

The domain name is currently home to a  USA and UK based web hosting company, Dragon Networks and has been owned by the current holders since 1991.

Dragon.com has a page rank of 4 and a Alexa ranking of 1.1M.

According to Compete.com the site gets around 7,500 visitors a month.

The owner has not set a price for the domain but stated to me:

“Due to the interest we have had so far, we are expecting the domain to go for 7 figures.”

Here is some of the selling points of the domain according to the owner:

“As a domain name the strengths of Dragon.com are many and significant. In particular:”

“It is culturally, historically and internationally recognised as both a name and a symbol. It has universal appeal.”

“It is short, highly memorable and has many very strong positive associations (prosperity, good fortune and wisdom in the East, strength and power in the West)”

“In the traditional Chinese calendar the year 2012 is the Year of the Dragon.”

The owners are seeking expressions of interest to be received by the 15th August 2011.

To register an expression of interest or for further information please email me at domain@dragon.com.

Disclaimer:   we are not representing the owner nor are we getting paid for this post or any commission off the sale.

Can’t see it going for 7 figures, I would say 6 figures at best

It looks like he is looking for a timely sale, with the whole “Year of the Dragon” pitch. I am not so sure I would be bragging about 1.1M Alexa Rank and 7,500 visitors a month. I would have expected much better.

That being said I do think it’s a high quality name. It will take a lot of effort to be able to sell for 7 figures though.

One rich Chinese parent will buy it for a Billion $$$….for her…her ONLY SON.

And it’s one of those rare app names that can be expressed by an image on an icon that is universally recognized across cultures and geographies

I agree, very low 6 figure name based on my check marks. Nothing suprises me these days, every private generic .com that hits the market for the first time is 7 figures, stupidity and hype.

So, I would say 6 figures too. There are similar names like for example; lion, tiger, camel, eagle, viper, snake, puma. Its different the cruises, pizza, casino, wines and others.

I see this as a very solid mid 6 figure name. I have a hunch that “Dragon” type of media properties could be the next “Vampires” Some decent companies with Dragon as well…Dragon Naturally Speaking. Good luck to the sellers. Would be nice to see another big ticket sale this year to keep some momentum going and domain names in the news (on a positive note)

    Gut feeling is $200,000-$300,000.

Does anyone here have a credible understanding (which is not the same thing as “having an opinion”) on how the Chinese tend to approach ascii.com keyword names like this?

Who knows? probably 2 million. Thank to apple and apps for that. 3 years ago maybe it would have got 200-250k.

If I would have this kind of domain name I would invest some few grand and make it on top of Google for the name Dragon to get significant boos in traffic. Of course it won’t be related to main business of the company but then this domain would sell in 7 figure range. But right now I can’t see it selling that high unless some Chinese dragon fan or large corporation is targeting this name

I think a seven figure sale for this one could “drag on”.

I guess a lot of people like Dragons.

But I think the next 7 fig sale is going to be:
    RaiseCapital.com

The know the site is up for sale and a name like RaiseCapital.com is global especially during this never ending recession.

Good luck to Dragon and a good weekend to all.

Yup, dragons are selling like hotcakes lately. Maybe some chinese guy will buy it since they all speak english over there and sell dragons as pets and all that. 10 million for this domain at the very least…

    Dragon.Me anyone?

This seems like a no brainer for Nuance to acquire. I think $1M is way too much though. I think $500k is more realistic.
