HorseRacing.com & AutoRacing.com To Hit The Auction Block At DomainFest?

May 17, 2011 by Michael Berkens

According to a short story appearing in the thoroughbredtimes.com, it appears the domain names HorseRacing.com and AutoRacing.com may hit the auction block at the Domainfest auction in Barcelona in June.

According to the article, the owner of both names is Gregory Paley.

“‘Paley, a business lawyer who purchased the domain name in 1995, said he plans to offer horseracing.com at the Moniker’s Premiere Auction DOMAINfest Barcelona on June 8”

“Paley told the Wall Street Journal that the name could garner between $5-million and $8-million.”

“What makes these names so valuable is there is no substitute or derivative URL for HorseRacing.com or AutoRacing.com,” Paley said. “Also, these domains are best of breed names in their respective content categories and offer a significant competitive advantage for companies seeking to reach global audiences with highly visible brands that offer instant and memorable name recognition.”

Nice names

$5M-$8M might be a tad ambitious  though.

But best of luck to the owner.

“auto racing” 3,600 exact searches per month. 1,300 of those in the US.

“horse racing” 74,000 exact searches per month. 14,800 of those in the US.

you should have caps locked when you typed TAD.

I’m not a native English speaker but Horserace.com and horseraces.com seem like valid alternatives in case the price is exorbitant

It’ll will sell for much lower price after the auction. Just like all the over priced domains in auctions.

you never know someone rich Saudi might just buy it for 100 million for his camel racing hobby.

You know, they are getting so much money from the oil, they just don’t know what to do with the excess $$$

AutoRacing.com is an amazing name. Of course, one has to wonder if the truly biggest players in the auto racing industry even know this domain name will be coming available.

I agree with the owner that the terms “Auto racing” and Horse racing” are incomparable. Really no close substitute.

This is the part of the reason why domainers look stupid. It doesn’t take a genius… even for a non-domainer.. to stumble upon valuate.com and realize the given value of autoracing.com is 30k and horseracing.com is 100k. To blatantly say its worth millions does nothing but to label domainers as unrealistic and scum. Why would any auction house accept a reserve higher than 20,000/80,000 is absurd.

The only thing stupid is the person taking valuate.com as having any value. Automated appraisal sites mean nothing to anyone in the real world they should say for entertainment purposes only.

Rick, you rely on domain valuation sites to tell you what a domain is worth? Every one of them will tell you something different. Both domains are worth far more than the 30K and 100K numbers you quoted. Yes, maybe he’s a bit ambitious in saying 5-8 million, but 1 million at least for each wouldn’t be that surprising. Besides, you always price high… if you price at what you want, you’ll get far less after the negotiations are done.

what auction house would set a reserve at 20k if it’s known there exist people who would pay 1M for a domain name?

if the high prices are annoying, then perhaps the issue should be taken up with the buyers who are paying them.

sellers don’t drive prices up, clueless buyers do.
sellers can’t do it alone. it takes two.

if there is a problem, willing buyers are the source of it.

    @for

Just because a million dollars is a lot to you, doesn’t mean it’s a lot to other people or companies. Anyway, even if buyers are “clueless,” why does that bother you? I don’t really understand the “problem” you’re talking about. Even great pieces of art have low reserve prices in comparison to what many of them end up selling for. (Which is a lot more than a paltry million dollars.)
