Blackberry Makes Bing Its Default Search Engine

May 4, 2011 by Michael Berkens

Give a big check to Microsft today which just beat Goolge out to become the default search engine for all Blackberry devices.

Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the US and internationally.

Also, Bing will have regular, featured placement and promotion on the BlackBerry App World carousel.

Bing is already shipping as the default search engine and map app for the new BlackBerry Playbook. The two companies plan to market the partnership as “Making better decisions with Bing on BlackBerry.”

Bing will be “deeply integrated” into the devices, creating “unique experiences for millions of BlackBerry customers,” Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer

The Bing/Yahoo partnership has been chipping some market share away from Google which is most recently down to 65% market share

Bing loses $3 billion per year without increase so much its SE market share, so, my guess is, that, next year, Microsoft could sell its SE to Google or Baidu

The government would not allow Google to buy Bing

Pity in a few years time, Blackberry will become an also-ran like PALM of yesteryear

It’s a 2 horse race between the Apple & Android platforms

In short, these 2 losers (in the mobile space) both deserve one another

    Nice move for Bing.

“Microsoft could sell its SE to Google or Baidu”

No offense but you are clueless. First what MHB said, a monopoly will not be allowed and second, MSFT isn’t about to surrender online when everything is moving there. It’s not like MSFT is starving for cash.

    Aggro,
never underestimate MSFT. They essentially bought Nokia off to use their operating system on phones. After Steve Jobs is gone we don’t know what will happen to Apple.

this wouldn’t be news unless a great many users are extremely lazy or incapable of changing settings.

it just reminds us of the incredible power of “defaults”. as in “default settings”.

the default search engine is just the tip of the iceberg. there’s almost no such thing as “sane defaults” anymore. the idea of letting a user set up their own sensible defaults has by and large been lost.

“deeply intergrated” = make it a real PITA to change
