Google.TV Hits The Pause Button

December 20, 2010 by Michael Berkens

According to several reports out today, Google.TV is not ready for prime.

Google has asked some manufactures that were getting ready to  unveil new Internet-ready TVs at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month to delay the rollout.

It appears according to those reports that Google is having software issues.

There is also the issue of programming, with all the major networks so far saying there are not going to allow their programs on Google.TV.

Here are a few stories you can ready on the topic, here, here and here.

because the GoogleTV hardware still is TOO expensive and the TV contents’ producers have FEAR to give (free) so much power to Google (and they are RIGHT to have fear of Google!)

It may be a hiccup for Google TV for now, but Internet TV ‘is coming’, and the manufacturers of Internet Ready TVs are going to want to start getting them out there into the marketplace. So I’m sure they’ll be plentiful and on full display at the CES show next month with or without Google, and I’m looking forward to going and seeing them, and other Internet TV related products. This should be a hot market for the next few years.

I dont see how this is much more cost extensive then the ground work that has already been laid out.
TV shows are already digitalized. That is how things like DVR works (Digital Video Recorder). They are shown already on websites (hence Hulu). The only thing that has not been done is making a TV system that works with the internet.
Granted I can already use my 1080P TV with my computer and view most anything on the internet. That is a simple cable and the correct graphics settings.
So all the components are there already for Google to make this happen.
Other then some software issues (which is being claimed)… this shouldn’t be all that difficult to put together.
I *DO* think that Google does have enough money to make this happen.
I agree that Global warming is a sham especially once you consider that Al Gore is inline to make billions with that whole carbon credit thing… You can never trust anyone to tell you the truth, who stands to make a profit from the lie (i.e. Human Condition).

    2. Google’s social agenda is largely set by a cleric (a clown) in a three-piece suit.

    3. In Consumer Electronics it is the small details like the IR Remote Layout and integration with Software and the DLNA Browser and the Yahoo Software Library (wooooa Not Google ? nope !! Yahoo) and the other components that make it all work. It is non-trivial.

When I read this post, I had to do a double-take after seeing “Google.TV” (-> .TV). I had seen “Google TV” referenced numerous times in recent months, but never dotTV!

Of the 3 articles Mike listed, one of them does actually mention “Google.TV” specifically. If Google were to brand this new service as Google.TV, the impact to the .TV space would be truly enormous, a literal game changer.

The other part of this story is Google positioning itself as a player … sitting right in between the consumer and major network TV programmers.

I recently wrote about traditional cable companies being edged out as online consumers obtained their TV programming direct over the internet. However, Google’s TV service acts as a new go-between. It’s really pretty smart of them to do this, and again puts them in a leadership position at the start of a new technological shift arriving in TV programming distribition.

That FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBS are blocking their own content from being channeled through Google TV says there’s going to be a protracted war. Google TV may become as popular and necessary as the traditional cable company.

In the end, the networks will want a relationship with Google TV. Mark these words. It’s similar to the old traditional newspapers thinking they did not need the internet.

Uncle Sam and the .FCC are poised to be the referees in that “protracted war”.

Domainers may be surprised where they fit in that “protracted war”.

Politicians have long understood the value of .WAR for the economy. CyberWar should be similar but different. Domainers sailing in gravy boats and riding the
gravy trains will likely be early casualties.
