TechCrunch: Apple Doesn’t Own 1 iPad Domain Name

January 27, 2010 by Michael Berkens

Interesting to say the least is the post by TechCrunch today that Apple does not own even 1 iPad related domain name.

As you know by know Apple chose to name its tablet the iPad rather than the long rumored iSlate, even through it owned islate.com

The fact that Apple went with the name of the product while not owning any related domains sure is surprising.

From Tech Crunch:

“””(Apple) doesn’t have control over even a single domain name that has iPad followed by a country or generic TLD. Out of Cupertino’s hands, at least for the time being: iPad.net, iPad.biz, iPad.info, iPad.fr, iPad.de, iPad.es, iPad.eu, iPad.se, iPad.cn, iPad.be and iPad.jp. To name but a few.””

So domainers what are your thoughts about this move?

It’s still early. They have until April to get it straightened out.

They’re likely still in negotiations to buy or they could be leasing it and the owner name would remain.

Maybe they don’t want it. Their brand is big enough already. How much business will they lose by not having the ipad domain? I really can’t see it being that much.

Having the .com is a must, they lose a lot of traffic if they don’t own it and many other things.

They are testing the waters I would guess to see the results, if they like it then they will continue this trend of not buying the domain for any future product.

I strongly think that they try to buy the domain, but were unsuccessful acquiring it from the current owner. Sometimes domain owners don’t sell their domains no matter how big the offer is.

I wouldn’t worry about them “losing traffic.” Anyone who wants this- and that will be many will find– or it will find them as any Apple user reading this has already got several emails with direct links.

They are not concern at this time. Remember, they got iPhone after the press released.

Maybe they can change it for iGimmick.com where I’m happy to sell 🙂

Seriously, I’m getting my own iPad. I love my iPhone, iPad is a good add-on gadget.

If you guys really think ipad.com is worth alot to apple, then how much do you think i-pad.com is worth?

You can buy it right now for only $3250.

    i-phone.com, i-pod.com is not owned by apple…so i guess apple doesn’t want i-pad.com either!

iphone.com, ipod.com, ipad.com …these domain names do not get that much traffic…check the alexa ranking.

I personally think these domains are not worth that much to apple…apple don’t care…they know people will end up at apple.com

    @Anunt

If you’re asking the domainers, the i-pad.com is tough to sell despite this publicity. You have a better chance of selling this domain to the outsider.

    Good luck.

Bigger problem is they don’t own the trademark to iPad-

Snapped up iPads.co.in @ reg. That’s a potential market of 1 billion people who could one day be carrying ipads! Besides, could be used to sell ipads in any market. can’t wait and iPad rocks!

Oops. Looks like enero6.com has gone proxy.

It had the name Martine Bejasa as owner, who was also listed in ipad.com.

Also, Steve Jobs has special connection with January 6 (enero 6 is Spanish).

    Look it up.

    Fascinating stuff.

Thank the good folks over at Elliot’s blog.

It is a direct charge that Sedo is having to pay with Paypal. Probably the alternative to passing it on is just not accepting Paypal. Agree about the “nothing more” though, sounds somewhat deceptive.
