Microsoft Hires Ex-Yahoo Exec to Lead It’s Online Group

December 4, 2008 by Michael Berkens

Microsoft hired a Qi Lu, a former Yahoo search executive to as President of  its Online Services Group, responsible for all of the software maker’s Web-based programs and services, including search and online advertising.

Lu spent a decade working for Yahoo. He oversaw a high-profile effort, dubbed Project Panama.

More than 100 Yahoo executives have left since January 2007.

Lu left Yahoo in August, shortly after the company hired Google to show some of the ads next to its search results. The proposed partnership disillusioned some of Yahoo’s search engine specialists who saw the deal as a signal that the company planned to spend less time and money to improve its own technology.

The alliance fell apart last month when Google backed out to avoid an antitrust battle with the Justice Department.

Hiring Lu “shows that Microsoft is doubling down on search again,” said Matt Rosoff, an analyst for the independent research group Directions on Microsoft.

“This is the clearest indication we’ve had that Microsoft is not going to buy any part of Yahoo,” said Rosoff.

I applaud Microsoft on trying to improve their search engine. I’m not exactly sure what their numbers are, but them adding the whole “Live Cashback” has definitely stirred something up… I have friends who have never known about Live.com who have actually started using it instead of Google because of its “cool changing pictures”.

Good on Microsoft – it is about time for them to change.

Listen to the customer Microsoft and you can do no wrong – if you want to have and get more customers – it is simple.

I think Live shall grow stronger and stronger but lets be honest shall it ever be as good as Google ?

Will it ever have a brand like Google?

I dont think so but I do wish microsoft the best for taking Google on and attempting to take a share of there business.

If only someone would take MS on for a share of there business?

    Regards,

    Robbie

well us domainers now have 2 feeds.yahoo and google, the antitruct dept made sure of that.this will enhance domainers position as google attempts to lower pcc prices. after more than 10 yrs dominers still have no transpaency. when google gets 3.00
per click a domainer on direct navigation gets .20 cents.
and with mc live there is now a third competitor for google.
as this do no harm company harms america putting in words and phrases that the search customer is searching for.adding google chrome effecting direct navigation.with qu vi a legitimate talent at competitor live there is now a formidable competitor to google which enhances every domainer.

domain guy has been reading the domains for several months and enjoys the reading. when rick posts these are life changing events in the domain industry.congragulations on one yr. now for my suggestion for the domains website.
i think the domains published by most want domains should have several highlighted domains form their website and other competitive websites with commets, sales prices, type in traffic count,i also think there is talent on this board.and some of these for sale domians could be developed commets and upgrades could be posted growing your 25k reader per month base.which i think is signficant.
the domains could then add related articles about marketing, seo,
linking, adding content.a small domain public development sales and factory.if the idea is to sell domains then use and market your product.

    Domain Guy

    Thanks for your suggestions.

The purpose of this site is not to sell domains.

Some domain blogs promote their own domains for sale.

Nothing wrong with that, but that is not why I started the blog and it’s not want I want to do with it.

This blog is here really without a profit motive.

I know its hard to believe someone would spend the time and effort without trying to make money, especially coming from me.

This is my way of giving back to an industry that has given me so much.

If I can inform and advocate for all domainers on important issues, rally the troops when a issue needs the attention of all in the business, and once in a while effectuate a positive change for the industry, I’m a happy camper.

    Thanks for reading

MSFT image search is better and far more superior than GOOGLE’s or YAHOO’s… that is about it. That is a small battle that they have won — too bad it is not profitable… lol 🙁

Now, we’ll see what other moves they make in actual WEB search — tough road ahead. Good luck 🙂
