Here Comes Another Geo Site: Knoxville.com to Premier Next Week

November 30, 2008 by Michael Berkens

The Knoxville News Sentinel, announced today that they were finally going to use their long owned domain, Knoxville.com.

“”””Starting Friday, Dec. 5, Knoxville.com will become the News Sentinel’s premier online source of information about things to do in the Knoxville.  Major sections of the site will include movies, music, events, nightlife and dining. There also will be a visitor’s guide with information on attractions, hotels, shopping and moving to Knoxville”””

“””The site will feature entertainment blogs, online reviews, music videos, MP3 downloads, movie trailers and a comprehensive calendar.””””

“”””Our entertainment staff will update Knoxville.com throughout the day with the latest news on what’s happening in town.”””

Apparently the paper is going to at the same time change the name of their “Preview” section in the newspaper to Knoxville.com, “reflecting the complementary roles of our print and Internet guides to Knoxville entertainment.””

Kind of amazing that it took a traditional media company to wait so long to take advantage of a great .com it was just sitting on.

Now the question is can a stale old newspaper run an online business?

Sure, knoxville.com will give them a start but can they pull it off?

Also, I was watching the ceo of forbes, fortune and business week on cspan last night. He said one of his publications will soon be all digital and it is not one that starts with an F.

So, get ready to see Business Week cease publication.

Everytime we hear of a media publisher making it’s domain name its central focus of reference, it can only be very good news fo the domain insutry.

I have never seen so many banner ads trying to generate traffic for online media properties in the past Q.
