Social Networking Bigger Than Porn?

September 16, 2008 by Michael Berkens

Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise says has analyzed information for more than 10 million Web users and  concludes that social networking sites are now the king of the Internet, dethroning pornography.

Tancer, in his new book, Click: What Millions of People are Doing Online and Why It Matters, said young users spend so much time on social networks that they don’t have time to look at adult sites.”

One of the major shifts in Internet use in the past decade had been the decline in interest in porn and adult entertainment sites.

He said surfing for porn had dropped to about 10 per cent of searches from 20 per cent a decade ago, and the hottest Internet searches now are for social networking sites.

“As social networking traffic has increased, visits to porn sites have decreased,” said Tancer, indicated that the 18-24-year-old age group particularly was searching less for porn.

Tancer, in his new book, Click: What Millions of People are Doing Online and Why It Matters, said young users spend so much time on social networks that they don’t have time to look at adult sites – many social networks website are loaded with adult movies and etc.

Yes, probably now there is no need to search for it, they just know where it is. The conclusion seems to be based on the assumption that search engine patterns mean anything and the assumption that social networking sites aren’t themselves porn sites – I’m not sure that either assumption is correct.

I would echo what Greg B said. In my own digital music area, I see that over years generic searches for music terms have declined. It’s not that people like pop music less, or listen to music less – they just know more places where to go directly to get it compared with few years ago when they had to search.
