Mobile SEO; Death of the .Mobi

August 18, 2008 by Michael Berkens

At the Search Engine Strategies show being held in San Jose, today’s topic was Death of the .Mobi.

The first speaker was Dhana Pawar, Co-Founder & VP Products, Yojo Mobile who asked the question;

Why is .mobi less than ideal?

Her Answers:

Bad for SEO (Mobile and Traditional)
Splits traffic, you have to duplicate effort.
Splits links
Splits Index size
Doesn’t benefit from history
Risks Duplicate content
Confusing for Users
There’s no preferrence for it in Mobile search engines
No unique assets or features

Other speakers talked about the same thing we have mentioned in many of our posts, the huge use of the iphone for mobile internet users which has that .com button.

    Not surprised, I have allways said that what can make the success of the mobi is ONLY:
    There’s some preferrence for it in Mobile search engines.

    The marketing of .mobi’s needs to be done to mobile internet devices like cell phones.

    .mobi will be a hot property in the next 3 years.
