ICANN HATES YOU

April 8, 2008 by Michael Berkens

The president of ICANN today, reveled what he thought of your domainers: your a problem and he doesn’t like you.

In a story written in the gulfnews.com today the publication in writing about the possibility of ICANN granting of new domain extensions said:

“”””Domaining, which is technically legal, is still somewhat controversial. Domainers purchase non-trademarked domain names in the hopes of either reselling the name at a profit. Some websites have resold for millions of dollars. Other domainers “park” the domain in order to generate advertising revenue. A parked site usually reroutes users to a website that contains ads.”””

“””While a number of international laws and internal procedures discourage squatting, Domaining is going to be an issue, Twomey said. “”””

Paul Twomey, is president and CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

Moreover Mr. Twomey said:

“””””While many would welcome the ability to have domain names in their native languages, there is a number of downsides, Twomey said, including cyber-squatting, typo-squatting and Domaining. “”””

Let’s be clear what these statement mean.

Mr. Twomey, in listing problems with the domain industry, listed them as: cyber squatting, typo squatting and Domaining.

So if you own a domain portfolio that has no trademark issues, no typo issues, just pure generic domains, Mr. Twomey says that this is a problem. “It’s going to be an issue”.

ICANN is funded by you. For each domain registration or renewal ICANN get’s $.20 of your money.

Without Domaining, ICANN would not have the funding to exist.

Let’s be clear again, the President of an organization that receives a bulk of its funding from domainers, to administer domains, make rules and regulations for domains, thinks Domaining is a problem and going to be an issue.

Well as someone who gives, involuntarily over $10,000 a year in funding to ICANN, I am disgusted by the president of ICANN remarks.

The number is 1,966. That is the number of domains if you own, that you will be financially supporting ICANN, to the same extent, that it would take you to join the ICA.

Yes here we go again, the ICA.

The only group with a lobbyist that represents us, the hated domainers.

Hated by the group we have no choice but to support.

Hated by the group we have no choice to fund.

Hated by the group that regulates domain names.

“Going to be an issue”

You think you don’t need the ICA?

You really don’t think it’s not worth $295 to have a voice?

Who is going to fight “the issue” for you?

Or you just going to lay down and let them take your business away?

    Bravo Michael !

My read all along is that ANY domain Name that is valuable will be in the predators sites. The Snowe Bills interpretation encompasses ALL lease holders in ALL extensions !

We are forming a defense coalition along with the I.C.A. called ” HelpRaiseFunds.com a 24/7 fund raiser used to protect all business lease holders in all extensions.

Its time to unite our forces, we are looking for volunteers to form a hardwood paddle to fight back the bristling legions of predators envious of our positions. Turn a deaf ear at your peril. Maybe I’m a crazy Pragmatist, but Id like to build my businesses on leased sites that are protected. Rather than build businesses that are in peril of losing their leases to skillful lawyers and their interpretation of the law. Before you build be sure youre not within reach of the Snowe Bill psunami. Create, Collaborate ,Protect. Join the I.C.A. cause ” HelpRaiseFunds.com

    Frank was right:

“It’s time for Paul Twomey to step down as CEO of ICANN” (Sevenmile.com Sept 9, 2007)

Correct. This is a horrible view to have as a leader in the industry. It is just as bad as his vision that “virtual worlds are the future of e-commerce”, which is the article Frank was referencing in his call for Twomey to step down.

Even worse, he puts into a negative light that that many of these domains have sold for millions of dollars. At the same time, he is pushing .Asia, a ridiculous TLD. Does he really think the publicity of a million dollar .com sale is bad for business, especially in comparison to wasted additional TLD’s, such as .Asia that will eventually collapse and only embarress the industry?

I agree with Frank. Bring in some fresh blood.

    In a story appearing in

    http://www.domainbits.com/icann-story/

    He reports:

I have since been contacted by Jason Keenan, who works at ICANN media relations. His statement is as follows:

“I have discussed this news report with Paul Twomey and he has asked me to clarity that the Gulf News article incorrectly suggests that he has concerns with domainers. As he said to me: “When asked to look ahead at what might happen on the Internet, I did say it was likely domainers would move increasingly into the ccTLD space. In no way did I say or suggest that domainers were a negative force in any way and certainly did not refer to them as “a downside.” The many domainers I have met and chatted with at meetings across the globe will know I would never say such a thing. As I noted in my closing remarks at the Dubai meeting, the marketplace has evolved and domainers are a part of the robust domain name market that exists today.”

    We will keep you updated
