Back in May of this year we reported that the domain name Light.co sold on Afternic/Godaddy for $25,000

A nice price for a nice .Co domain name.

Today the Term Sheet is reporting that Light.co, a digital photography startup, has raised $9.7 million in Series A funding.

Bessemer Venture Partners and CRV co-led the round, and were joined by Paul Jacobs (Qualcomm exec chairman) and Sanjay Jha (ex-Motorola Mobility CEO).

Now the question becomes what is going on with light.com

As present the domain does not resolve at all, which is usual for a domain of this quality.

The domain name light.com is owned by  The Light Company, with the address under privacy at Network Solution,s which owned the domain since at least 2000 according to DomainTools.com.

According to Screenshots.com, Light.com was a parked page as recent as 2012 and appears to have continuous been parked since 2004.

Neither Light.co nor Light.com has any Alexa or Compete ranking.

It would seem logical they anticipated raising millions in funding and yet the best name a digital photography startup could come up with for $25k was Light.co? Since they didn’t acquire a .COM, aren’t there some new TLDs that are photography related?

yes there are new gTLD’s including .photography which I think is number 4 or 5 at the moment

looks like LightCo.com was not renewed and might be going into auction

Evidently they preferred to go with a shorter solution.

Brands don’t rely on the TLD as much as they used to. Many start ups use .org, .net or even .co and .io.
Heck, they’d use .XYZ too if it weren’t for the NetSol robo-registrations.
