An interesting mix of companies applied during Sunrise for .menu domains.

While some of the Sunrise domains like nestle.menu; fridays.menu; tgifridays.menu; panerabread.menu; pfchangs.menu;
icantbelieveitsnotbutter.menu, joyofcooking.menu; sweettomatoes.menu and kentuckyfriedchicken.menu are bang on for those in the food or restaurant industry, most of the trademarks were by tech companies and other global brands.

Even Mark Monitor and Godaddy registered their respective .menu domains

Google; Linkedin; Amazon; BMW; Dupont; Micosoft; and Yahoo all registered Sunrise .Menu domains for some of the worlds most well known brands including:

adsense.menum.

adwords.menu

YouTube.menu

A menu is a tech term for navigation

I imagine if one could log into the menu over the web they could open he application on any device or connection. Remember what the Guardian reported “David Green, head of global digital marketing at KPMG, which applied for the .kpmg suffix, has also been forthright about the implications of this new wave of gTLDs. He likens the changes to previous industrial revolutions, making the point that top-level domains are not just web addresses, but “massively scalable” databases, which could be used for industrial-scale applications.”

Are gTLDs top level domains ? or are they Search Engine Centric Derivatives of top level domains? The generic gTLDs are the most Search Engine Dependent of all the extension business destinations available. They depend solely on the search engine model for locating your business. The search engine dependency of these extensions, make them the least desireable Online Marketing Strategy.

Your .COM Business Model remains long after your last Ad Campaign. Make sure your Ads promote (.COM) URL Centric Marketing and not Search Engine Centric Marketing. If your Ad campaigns do not promote Direct Navigation to your .COM site you are employing a self defeating campaign.

I’d consider RestaurantName.menu to be an excellent use of a vanity extension for marketing purposes. It can measurably enhance ease of use for people online. We generally know the name of a restaurant in advance when we’re curious about their fare (food/pricing). So it will be easy for consumers to get into the habit of navigating directly to the menu of interest.

This may not be earth-shattering as changes go. But the simplification is a benefit, however slight.

Domainers should not be overly critical of such things — whether they’re .COM purists or somewhat skeptical TLD agnostics like myself. And here’s why:

.MENU for getting to a menu encourages direct navigation. That’s a boon to the domain industry as a whole because it will train consumers that they CAN navigate the web WITHOUT going through the Google gate keeper and paying the Google toll.

Some vanity extensions will drive traffic into the arms of Google and diminish the value of brands and marketing. But other uses of vanity extensions — such as this one — can do the opposite.

Knee-jerk reactions are always too simplistic. Maybe I’ll convince a few people to look more closely.

So many misinformed marketers assume that the gTLDs, will be widely used. Our contention is they will easily be replaced by employing their generic designations more effectively through sub-domaining paired with the superior .COM Marketing platform.
Our view is that the usage of the gTLDs will never gain traction. We are convinced this whole expensive experiments only economic impact will be negative. The only temporary winners will be the Ad companies whose, short lived , support will be needed to prop up this seriously flawed Online Marketing Ploy. Long term sustained economic support for gTLDS is seriously in question, and we believe they are already an obsolesced marketing strategy.

I actually like .menu for direct navigation to a restaurant menu/prices page. That’s the best use I see for that extension tho.
