United States Postal Service Files Objection To All New gTLD .Mail Applications

March 27, 2013 by Michael Berkens

The United States Postal Service has filed a Legal Rights Objection with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) against all the new gTLD applications for .Mail.

The applicants for the new gTLD .Mail include Google, Amazon, and Donuts, Afilias and  1&1 Mail & Media GmbH,  which owns 1 & 1 hosting which is also a domain name registrar and also owns the domain name Mail.com and Web.de

In all there are 7 applications filed for .Mail.

As all of the applications are about email and not about delivering letters and packages to physical locations, it seems like a big waste of money to me especially for an organization which lost almost $16 Billion last year.

Other applicants for .Mail are; GMO Registry, Inc. a public company in Japan and WhitePages TLD LLC,;

    You’re likely right. It’s not only a waste of money, but a waste of time. In the end, it won’t matter much at all. After all, it’s not like USPS will suddenly start earning even less money just because someone owns .Mail. Other factors have much more influence on that.

    In any event, it’s curious why a company like Google would want a generic like .Mail, when they already have a well-known brand like Gmail. In some ways it looks like some of these applications aren’t so much applied for on a want or need basis, but so that no one else can have it. When you market any product that is in limited supply, (only 1 available in each of these gTLD cases), and also make it something of a contest to obtain it, people often don’t think straight. Of course if you have billions of dollars, it doesn’t hurt so much not to think straight, whether you’re applying for a gTLD or bidding on a rare sports car. But the fact that we’re seeing a good number of applications withdrawn lately shows that some companies, after taking time for reflection, may have come to their senses, and now see little value or benefit in the concept of owning yet another domain name extension(s).

    The United States Postal Service is losing Billions of Dollars every year. And in a Time when we are $16.5 Trillion Dollars in debt, we just can not afford this large scale of waste.
    UPS, and FEDX are showing a profit, so is the Post Office Mismanaged? Yes, all Government Operations are mismanaged. The simple fact that Mail-Persons are making $37/hour to deliver mail.
    The time has come when the Post Office needs to become a Private company that lives or dies on how well they perform.

    Objections aside, you guys should probably do a little research on exactly “why” the USPS is in the red… it isn’t what you think.

    Hello MHB,

    There is far too much Bribe Money already let out for this not to happen, gTLDs are coming.

    Take Heart .COM Holders !

    With the advent of the new gTLDS being introduced, its effect will severely impact the Search Engine Marketing Sector. According to MIT (Mass. Inst.Tech.) type-In traffic will be expanded rapidly and will be common place. Consumers are very reluctant to change and there are studies to prove that they will avoid doing business on a non-.COM site. This splintering and dividing of the Search Engine Market bodes well for a brilliant future, for Pure Play Generic .COM Profit Centers. M I T foresees Type-Ins, We foresee a seachange shift into .COM Profit Centers.
