AccuWeather Files Objection On Weather Channel’s Application For .Weather

March 26, 2013 by Michael Berkens

According to USAToday.com AccuWeather has filed an objection with the International Chamber of Commerce on the Weather Channel’s application for the new gTLD .Weather

The Weather Channel plans to operate the new gTLD as a closed generic TLD.

According to the Weather Channel’s application:

“The mission and purpose of a new restricted .weather gTLD is to benefit internet users by ensuring increased trust, convenience and utility.”

“The .weather gTLD will create a next generation gTLD serving the interests of end users. The .weather gTLD will provide an authoritative Internet space for weather content, where the trusted services and resources of The Weather Channel, LLC (TWC), its affiliates, and partners will be closely controlled and made available to consumers around the world. The majority of the anticipated domain name registrations in .weather will be used in the communication of TWC’s content and services, including accurate, easily accessible, and potentially lifesaving weather-related information. A subset of domain names has the potential to be created and used for personalized and hyper-local information purposes.”

The objection is not yet posted on the International Chamber of Commerce site.

The Weather Channel also applied for .weatherchannel

It’s sounds strange that they filed an objection with ICC, which can only be community objection or limited public interest. LPI doesn’t apply here, so is AccuWeather filing a community objection ? They are not a community, they are a competitor… an LRO would fit best, or they could have gathered all Weather portals besides TWC. We need to wait probably until April-12 for all objections to be published, but this one really deserves a closer look.

Accuweather needs to chill. WC already has weather.com plus people get their weather these days on apps on mobile devices. What kind of market would there be for a dot weather extension anyway? This is moronic. Most of these extensions will be forgotten. Why companies like Accuweather and Verisign would be worry is perplexing. My guess/OPINION is some attorneys have convinced them that they should let them rack billables worrying about this stuff. As I said it’s just a hunch.

Agreed, 3D. It’s been a long time since I bothered to check the weather through a website. For the past couple of years it’s been just a quick touch away on my iPad, which basically makes extensions like .Weather rather useless even before it becomes active.

Someone has to stand up to Weather dot com

Weather dot com is buying up all the independent weather websites and absorbing them. Weather dot com used to crash my computer. The trouble is too many ads, which render it glitchy and slow-loading.

    Chears AccuWeather!
