GAYS.DE has just bought two domain names Gay.de and Gay.at for “a staggering €165,000 (approx. $218,000)”

According to a press release, “Prior to purchase GAYS.DE was already one of the largest dating communities in the market with around 250,000 members.”

“In the next step we want to transmit the community’s editorial content into mobile internet so we can meet our members’ increasing needs for location-based information and contacts,” explains Griese, adding with a smile, “for that to happen, we’re also looking for experienced web developers to reinforce our gay team!”

The Seller is Special Entertainment GmbH, headquartered in Munich.

Are there any German based domain brokers that read this blog?

    MHB –

Yeah I know that Michael cheers, the only small problem is the 3.2billion other domains listed there! 😉

I was hoping for one of your great readers who happens to be in Germany to put their email down or link to their site so I could propose something to them.

    LOL @ “staggering”

What’s so staggering about the price?

The fact it’s not a dot com?
Or the fact it wasn’t sold by you?
(I have never seen nor do I expect you to mention any of your own sales as “staggering”…even meet.me)

In fact, for a top generic, the price is low even just for gay.de
Certainly a few years (~2007-2008) back it potentially would have fetched more.

Also if another savvy buyer (with a similar dating/portal business model) – a potential competitor – had snatched it from the seller, gays.de would be in deep shit..
Given that ‘gay’ is the far more preferred term compared to ‘gays’..
Plus they let in a competitor when they could have shut them out by acquiring the domain…
Not to mention the loss of visitors from confusion traffic (gay/gays)
