USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter Declares Doritos, Bud & VW The Big Winners & Godaddy A Loser

2011 February 7
by Michael H. Berkens

USA TODAY’S 23rd annual exclusive Ad Meter just came out for the Super Bowl commercials and it looks like Doritos came out the big winner.

The winner featured a guy who teases a hungry pug dog with Doritos that was made by a 31-year-old part-time designer of websites for kids for about $500.

A Bud Light ad featuring a dog sitter who gets the canines to cater his party tied for the top spot.

“The No. 3 spot for VW’s Passat, and a kid in a Darth Vader costume”

As far as Godaddy ranking they did not fair well although the .Co commercial with Joan Rivers scored well above the Danica Patrick, Jillian Michaels commercial which finished as the 3rd least popular.

As far as Internet company’s CareerBuilder.com got the best ranking.

    shouldn’t .co be a non-issue?

Creativity doesn’t have to cost the earth. Frito Lay spent millions on their advertising, but the $500 ‘crash the super bowl’ winning entry from JD Burningham was at least as well received as the much more expensive offerings. How was this possible? Crowdsourcing.

There is one thing being overlooked here however; the Godaddy commercial had a strong incentive to drive visitors to their website. I thought that was pretty smart.

I liked this one better than the others.

“Not so. I am an expert in marketing and I call tell you for a fact that Joan left an indelible mark in everyone’s memory.”

    @Robert (expert in marketing)

That’s the problem, it was .co’s chance to leave an indelible mark in everyone’s memory…not Joans

UNLESS the additional .co reg numbers due to the ad prove otherwise then it may not have worked out as intended – but nobody seems very forthcoming with those figures as of yet.

..yes, I know its early days :)

..they should be hitting the 1,000,000 mark about…wait for it…wait for it…

    now!

    why does it matter?
will it make you behave differently?

The Joan Rivers ad is gaining some traction in the MSM – perhaps it will have a more positive impact that most, including myself, initially thought.

Yes if you want to win awards godaddy didn’t win, but I bet they got new customers. Plus domainers may have also taken advantage of their promotion.

Yet – as someone else mentioned before Name.com has your .co’s for $7.77

  10. 2011 February 8

ccTLD’s are a-rockin – these sales are from last week (From DNJournal):

Soc.io sold for $2500 – site is up.
Jamaica.nl sold for $12,455 – site is up.
    Work.io sold for $4,500
    TechZone.in sold for $3,975
    LuxuryEstate.it sold for $2,740

What’s my point? If the above, obscure ccTLD’s are selling at these prices, .co will do very well considering the marketing dollars behind it.

It’s the morning after. The blogosphere is abuzz with excitement about Super Bowl Sunday, and EnCirca is tickled to join in and offer special pricing for registering a dot-co domain. EnCirca’s promotional pricing for a dot-co registration is $11.99 for the first year and will be available until Friday, February 11, 2011. Dot-co, an old domain name, has reinvented itself and is now available for unrestricted international use.
The explosive rise of dot-co as a popular domain is in large part because many businesses have brands and trademarks that they would like to register but have been taken in .com. But, even big businesses like Twitter and Overstock.com have gotten in on the deal and have become early dot-co adopters.

“There have been over 600,000 dot-co registrations in less than a year,” says Tom Barrett, President of EnCirca. “Names are going fast and businesses should protect their brands and trademarks.”

The suffix dot-co is universally recognized as an abbreviation for company. In a dot-co registry survey, 75 percent of respondents equated dot-co with “company,” “corporation,” or “commerce.” In fact, nearly 50 countries use dot-co as a second-level domain name to depict just that, such as co.uk and co.jp.

Going price on LLL.CO is $15,000

    BMR.CO sold for $15,000

Whatever naysayers say, the stats and numbers speak for themselves.

    LLL. CO

all gone in less than 24 hours after the super bowl.

    Just incredible

    Sad but very newsworthy

I believe LLL.CO valuations are now going to go through the roof.

Would not be surprised to see $100,000 sale within the year.

I understand that you are saying all 3 letter .co are gone.

You don’t have to post another comment on it every 15 minutes.

The Sedo .Co auction starts tomorrow where some of the best .Co domains on the planet are in.

    We will see what happens

  17. 2011 February 9

    Hi Robert,

“MHB”… ask you nicely not to keep posting about the ??? .CO domains…being taken.

‘Everyone else here thinks it is a big deal’?

Your looking at the wrong poll numbers…

    Peace!
    Dan

BTW: please do not reply to my post…. for the love of ‘god .co’

  18. 2011 February 9

    @ Robert

LLL are the first things domainers target.

There are LLL sellouts in other secondary extensions like US/BIZ. It doesn’t mean virtually anything for their reseller value though.

Not every three letter .Co is registered.

There are many that are not registered yet not reserved such as net.co.

I ran the full database a month or so ago and found several hundred of the letter domains in this state of limbo.

I asked the .Co registry about these and the answer I got where these are domains that we in a landrush auction but did not complete for non-payment.

So technically since I know for a fact there are quite a few of these out there I couldn’t say they are taken, just unavailable.

  20. 2011 February 9

    @MHB

There are few LLL.CO s that are reserved by the registry which are basically super premiums that will go for $1Million plus but the

rest have now been registered in full.

    This is huge news that

    must be reported IMHO.

    @MHB

    NET.CO

    and

    COM.CO

are specially designated extensions in themselves:

    Like I registered BILL.COM.CO

You cannot consider these as ever being registerable. .CO has made them into extensions in their own right.
