.Co Land Rush Auctions Ring Up Another $500K In Sales

The .Co registry just released another round of results from the Land Rush domain name auctions totaling $480K in sales.
The top sale as we reported yesterday was mesothelioma.co which set a Land Rush Auction record of $76,000.
Despite most domainers believing that Slots.co would easily sell for more money than Denver.co (see the poll results on the right), Denver.co in fact fetched $50K while Slots.co ended at $41K.
Insure.co sold for $60K compared to the $16 Million QuinStreet bought Insure.com for.
I’m told there are approximately 200 land rush auction still running.
Once again these are only the results reported by the registry and not list of every land rush auction.

Denver.co doesn’t surprise me, good domain hack which makes marvellous sense.
These sales are very successful, no doubt about it. And don’t remember those are even not the premium of the premium, which is going to be auctioned later in public auctions.

I highly doubt that end-users were aware of the .co landrush applications, which took place 3 months ago, before the official launch.
For what I’ve seen, it’s mostly individual domainers, but also big players of the Internet world (web-agencies, holdings, etc.).

Which crowd is right – in fact, no one can be since you dont have a valuable product without both crowds.

Now you’re just being silly. Lots of people much smarter than I … just don’t agree with your viewpoint. Doesn’t mean I’m smarter than anybody here but if you think the crowd is always right then you dont realize the power of people who shape advertising campaigns or control the media. Many times the crowd is told what to think whether you want to believe it or not.
In one way or another we are all suckers and unable to process an entirely independent opinion of our own without some fact or influence by somebody with a biased opinion regardless of who we are.
Your opinion is not based purely on the crowd as you have a vested interest in .co investments. Mine is based on not really caring whether or not this extension ever works. To each its own but crowds are usually not smarter than the collective few.
Prime example in the US is when you vote for the President you also vote for maybe 50 other candidates for different positions yet most people dont know a single person except for the presidential canditate and just checkmark the box for which party they line with. Is this actually an example of a crowd being smarter? No. You need all the facts. Crowds do not – they follow the herd.

And why we have already 500,000 registrations and huge auction sale prices.

I think mesothelioma.co sets the bar for the usefulness of .co. Namely that the sole purpose would be to use it for catching typo traffic from .com. Since that’s the king of leadgen keywords. $76k is a great benchmark for valuing all the other keyword domains off of. A majority of which would fall out at about 0.5% of that name (i.e. in terms of GAKT). The final price of slots.co also fits this mold.
The other key is that we now have pricing for the most natural use of .co…as a geo modifier for Colorado. Using .co in standard advertising for product categories or company names obviously won’t work because people will immediately type .com. But Denver.co has a great chance of sticking in people’s brains. As will Aspen.co.
Finally, the other good use is for domain shorteners because of the 2 character TLD. Of course that’s also because they won’t need to be remembered since they’re cut and pasted. And it can’t be greater than 2-3 chars to be effective.
Imho, those figures just about wraps up the whole .co value debate.

I think a few here are looking for company for their misery. Why else would they expend so much energy trying to put .CO down.
“Mesothelioma” and “Denver” were very good keywords with obvious business potential right out of the gate. Mesothelioma in particular used to have the highest $ amount per click of any keyword.
DenverHomes.com sold for $35,500 in 2006 and is the highest Denver-related sale I am aware of.
Additionally, MesotheliomaLawyers.com went for $10,659 in 2009.

I hate to burst your bubble but mesothelium.co is not the twin of mesothelioma.co. Mesothelioma.co sold high because the keyword has one of the highest CPCs (I think its around $60 or something like that) because there is a lot of litigaton for cancer of the mesothelium and legal firms are willing to pay this for advertising). Mesothelium by itself just means a layer of skin, essentally. If the enduser offered you a few thousand, I would have taken it.
Personally, I find all these little opinions of other’s investments funny.
Without some level of risk there is no potential for reward. Those “few” mocking those taking risks will never be the ones that really do make it in this industry.
If you can’t, or won’t, shell out a hundred or two dollars for a potiential of huge returns you really have no business being in domaining. Period.

You have to have a stake in any extension that you think could become a valuable asset.
It would be stupid to put all your money in .Co or any “new” Extension but its equally stupid to have no stake in case the extension takes off.
@mhb a vanity shorter can also be used as a keyword draw. I registered many related to my brick business and the name of our cities. Now when posting on our Facebook, blog or Twitter page we should see a greater click rate.
Not many 3 letter .CO domain names left. Getting eaten up real fast.

This is a very true statement. If end users are going to consider an alternate extension they are usually only going to want top tier keywords.
In virtually any new extension the top tier keywords are grabbed by domainers asking ridiculous prices.
