Ask.com has begun testing a new service that lets users of its search engine submit questions to other Ask.com users

According to Doug Leeds, President of Ask.com, the new “Ask the Community” feature allows the search engine to provide specific answers to a greater portion of the search queries it receives, instead of simply displaying links to relevant web pages.

The community will vote on the best answers to determine the highest quality.

Ask.com will launch a social network Tuesday that allows people to poll the community for the best possible answer.

The social network is built on Ask’s search technology to classify and rank answers.

Businesses will have an opportunity to sign up and participate to answer questions. At first, Ask will not charge brands for “sponsored answers,” but that could change in time. Another potential revenue stream could come from paid-search sponsored listings.

According to ComScore, Ask.com had only 3.6% share of the U.S. search market in June.

    ASK is slipping.
I can’t see how they have even 3.6% – honestly.

It must come from providing the secondary feed to parking companies.

For us, our PPC campaigns on ASK, YAHOO and Google all had different results.

We found that the ASK PPC campaign was pretty much worthless.
Yes, clicks were cheaper, but they never converted.

I think people have lost faith in ASK, both from an advertising standpoint (as I just noted) as well as a “general user search” standpoint.

This just seems like a gimmick to lure people in.

(Maybe I’m just biased since I blew money over there with no results at all).

I will say, the customer service was OK though.

after all, I’ve predicted (over one year ago) that Yahoo and Bing will be (both) sold to Google for $1 in 2012…
