Frank Schilling tweeted out late tonight that there were 10,000 new .link registrations added as the result of a registrar promo.
One registrar ran a .LINK promo today and more than 10,000 paid registrations were added to the zone. .LINK will become a top 5 generic ext.

It seems to be Onamae a Japanese Registrar. (GMO INternet Group) Where are they going to .link to ?
Brad Mugford says
I checked their website and .link is 99 Yen, which works out to about $0.80. Yes 80 cents.
.Click is the same price as well.
The same registrar has around 100K .XYZ regs that were registered at the same prices.
With the oversupply and lack of demand pricing new gTLD is just a race to the bottom.

Yeah I see that Brad, it looks like the one banner .com is included at 99yen did you see that, these guys are running some crazy specials, there are new gtlds for 20 yen, 50 yen etc…
ada says
What do you expect when renewals are coming? Stay tuned, the party has just started.
Brad Mugford says
Yeah, I saw the same banner as well. However, the price is not the same for COM/NET.
I am assuming the banner translates to something like – “As low as 99 Yen”.
If you actually go through the checkout the COM/NET price is 680 Yen.
Brad
Mark Williams says
So it does has chances to be in top 5

As mentioned earlier, even on this website, Frank Schilling registered a huge number of domains with his own extension .link.
Many newTLDs renewals (inc .links) are coming so we will see more like this
Obviously, Schilling`s .link renewal will be high.

We all read such materials because we want to be better informed domain investors. We all own more domains than we can practically use, and we have all been down this road before with .info.
.ninja was offering 99 cent registrations, .country $1, .science free etc…
We all understand that if someone is serious about launching a business $10, compared to $1 is rarely a barrier to entry. Most of such free registrations sit parked at sedo, are used to spam, or expired after they go back to regular registration fee.
They maybe a good business stance for the underlying registry, but the investment grade potential of this mass produced product is not overshadowed by the fact that supply outpaces demand by astronomical proportions.
This is good new for uniregistry, all .link will have high renewal rates as most domains are owned under north sound domains. Do not confuse the registry investment model, with that of the domaining model.
Many a few who were singing from the trees about GTLD’s last year, and paying $250, $500, $1000 renewals, along with EAP’s, are sitting in a very dark corner right now.
Hope everyone prospers from their domain investments

Just a matter of time before this extension is used for spamming. I have seen first hand spammers using these cheap new extensions to peddle spam. It might look good for the registry short term (increased registrations) but long term a lot of these new extensions will be relegated to the junk spam pile because no new viable businesses are being built on them… Only spammers taking advantage of low cost registrations.
frank.schilling says
Most good names are NOT owned by Uniregistry.. That is a common misconception when no two people can agree on what a “good” domain is. Many good short meaningful english words in either singular or plural are registry for future development but that number is shrinking with each day of passing new registration that the registry left behind. .LINK is a generic alternative and it “looks right” in the browser so it’s going to be popular. Will it displace .com? Not in the forseeable future. Will it displace .BIZ and .PRO and .INFO? Definitely IMO! It may displace .NET with some good fortune even-though it’s a character longer. It’s all a matter of time, price, and marketing .. I see big things for .LINK and Uniregistry will be working hard to curate it to global prosperity.

Frank. I am calling your bluff and say bullshit.
Your buying am radio. Namejet. Bidding against your customers. U were smooth before all of this begun. Losing your street credit.
Jeff says
Frank you had an opportunity to crush donuts. Greed kicked in and domains hostage. Now the eap looks more brilliant and opportunities for investors.
Your other company trying pump up the numbers. Maybe your Namejet bidding your rethinking things and reading ricks blog.
Jeff says
How the fuck am I suppose to feel ? I’m putting money into franks pockets and he’s spending millions on .com
Your trying take me out of the market. That simple. I don’t need a rum cake. If you were not bidding against your customers I would have brought you more business.
Say what you want about godaddy but at least they are bidding me up in auctions and when I’m building my portfolio up.
Bryan says
I tend to see your last point here Jeff, when you are spending your money with this company, and they are using those profits to compete directly with you causing you to spend more money, smart money would not allow their business to be used in such a sense. I guess there is a bit of a dilemma here.
Jeff Schneider says
Hello frank.schilling,
Anyhow Frank We have all been fooled in life by the promise of more money, it can be a mesmerizing carrot. I fear that Google has installed GoogleGlasses on your head, that has really blurred your vision. I would just ask this simple question : Where would you be right now if you had waved on the GTLD experiment and instead focused your cash on buying quality .COM properties with the money you have gambled on the GTLD Experiment ? If you can set back and not protect your ego and honestly say your ahead right now great ! We are firmly sensing the GTLD Clusterfuck as Rick has called it is fogging your GOOGLEGLASSES and that maybe you should take them off and adjust your vision to whats really relevant and really going on.
Gratefully, Jeff Schneider (Contact Group) (Metal Tiger)
