June 13, 2012 by Michael Berkens

A company based in Gibraltar that you probably never heard of,  Famous Four Media has turned out to be one of the largest applicants of generic TLD’s. and actually I think my personal favorite list of new gTLD’s.

Here is the info about them from their site:

“Famous Four Media is a global provider of services to the gTLD industry with operations in London, New York and Gibraltar (global HQ).”

“We specialise as a full service provider enabling Registries to thrive on the back of our combined financial, technological and marketing reach.”

“Our team has extensive experience from the gTLD industry, having successfully been through the entire lifecycle of a gTLD Registry.”

Here are the extensions they applied for:

    Berkens:

You are carrying the reporting of the new gTLDs a little too far; it’s almost like a propaganda campaign of some sort! And I don’t mean “propaganda” in the nefarious way that it is often associated.

You should spend more time and effort explaining to us why we should care who registered what gTLD.

I count dozens of posts in my inbox heralding the application for gTLD by one outfit or the other. If you don’t stop, I will cancel my subscription to your blog posts.

    Thank you.

    @Uzoma,

This is a cheap and easy way for him to drive traffic – simple as that.

Uzoma, you don’t have to read every post.

Mike, i agree this is probably the best list.
Donuts has carpet bombed an incredible list as well.

Yes but Donuts has 307 apps Famous Four only has 61 but they are almost all winners.

They missed .ART, but otherwise a very respectable list.

    @ MHB

I think that ICANN is not going to approve the generic keyword TLDs as easy as the .brands or .geos , so applying for one doesn’t necessarily mean getting one. Off course this is just my opinion.

Mike, thats why i said carpet bombed 🙂

It’s like Frank’s and mine domain portfolios.
One has carpet bombed a huge portfolio together, the other has precision targeted a high end portfolio.
Famous 4 precision targeted quality high end TLDs, while donuts is carpet bombing for volume.

I can tell you they are well funded, smart group that are using Verisign as their back end providers.

so does icann have a bias for certain back-end providers?

    verisign vs. afilias vs. newcomer?

verisign seems like probably the best choice you could make as an applicant. they run the most important dns servers on the ‘net. but maybe there’s a little icann/verisign rivalry?

Verisign may be the best choice for some but not for everyone

ARI Registry Services – 10% of them
    Neustar – 90% of them

    No V$ at all.

Look at the applications my friends!

How can one ? “Look at the applications my friends!”

ICANN has taken the Applications offline

Also, if the Applications are passed around and morphed, they evolve so people have no idea who is proposing to do what. Also, all the Premium TLDs will be turning up for consumers via Peer-2-Peer DNS without any ICANN involvement.

In two years people may ask, “What was ICANN ?”
