Dev Hub just shared with me the results of a three month test of 50 domains chosen by the client a domain name portfolio holder. As you can see from the chart’s below, over the three month test the domains that were previously just parked, went from making $63 a month to over $140 a month.

The 50 domains went from having no search traffic when they were parked to getting almost 3,000 visitors from search in the third month on Dev Hub platform.

So while some of the improvement in revenue can be attributed to additional traffic generated from search, Dev Hub was able to generate 58% of the revenue from sources other than parking.

Pretty impressive, especially when you consider the fact that only 1/2 of the domains in the test were .com’s.

This report comes at a time when the industry is looking for new and better ways to monetize domains.

It was just a little over a month ago that I was sitting on the TRAFFIC test track panel when Mark Michael one of the co-founders of Evo Media Group, the company behind the development platform,, Dev Hub appeared before us looking for an additional $1.5 Million of investment capital. Although I was quite impressed with Dev Hub system and Mr. Michael’s presentation, I couldn’t commit to that type of funding in the 15 minutes we had.

Looks like I made a bad decision.

Dev Hub did in fact secure the investment they were seeking after the show.

Here is the charts and relevant data for the case study:

A must read for any of your doing, or thinking about site development appeared today in User Interface Engineering blog, concerning how changing one button on an e-commerce site resulted in increased sales of $300 Million dollars a year.

Of course this happened to a major, unnamed online retailer which already had customers, traffic and business.

But by changing one button on the site’s layout, they found the number of customers purchasing went up by 45%. The extra purchases resulted in an extra $15 million the first month. For the first year, the site saw an additional $300,000,00 in sales.

The bigger lesson here, is that a very small change in your site can lead to tremendous results.

Even if your site is successful, you should have a fresh set of eyeballs to critic your site to see if there something that could be done better, experiment by tinkering with the site to find the best results, keep an open mind. The best set of eyeball maybe one of a customer or inexperienced user. Generally when we ask someone to look over our site, we ask our friends and colleagues, most of whom are highly experienced internet users. We tend to forget that millions of our potential customers still use AOL because its “easy” (including many of my relatives) and have whole different perspective than we do on site layout and ease of completing transactions.

Go read the article now.

We are always glad to see the domain industry get coverage in non-domain publications.

The E-Commerce Times, just published a story discussing the value of buying a good domain name, highlighting the purchase of Bobblehead.com and Bobbleheads.com last year.

According to the story both domains were purchased by Warren Royal, last year at Sedo.com for $29,112 and $36,000, respectively.

The story notes:

Mr. Royal is quoting as saying “”"the domain purchases, he said, likely will pay themselves in less than a year… and I have already turned down an offer of more than $300,000 for the bobbleheads.com domain.”"

It is a nice story about the domain aftermarket, and the power of a brandable domain. Sedo and Jeremiah Johnston, its chief operating officer, are widely quoted. Jeremiah also serves as President of the Internet Commerce Association.

Congrats to all.
