Local.ly Sold For $100,000 To Set a Record Price For A .ly domain

by Michael H. Berkens

According to TechCrunch.com the domain name Local.ly just Sold For $100,000.

Unofficially I think its a record for a .ly domain but we will leave it to Ron Jackson to call it.

According to TechCrunch.com the seller of the domain is “Hadi Naser of domain name registration and professional services company Libyan Spider, apparently owns several hundred such ‘premium’ .ly domains and  runs a domain name brokerage service at domains.ly.”"

Certainly a nice sale congrats to the buyer and seller

Whoever responsible for buying it should lose their job for stupidity.

should lose their job for stupidity

… or sell it to Groupon …

  3. 2011 November 9

Just like soci.al and others it looks to be a interesting kind of domain name.

Was honoured to advise on this deal. DailyMotion bought dai.ly via us a while ago – no one got fired – nice hack, short and clean. Impossible to forget.

P.S. Facebook paid big bucks for friend-dot-ly last month… With new people in Libyan government the game goes on.

    Very nice sale.

  7. 2011 November 9

Congrate to the seller. Nice payday.

  8. 2011 November 9

I prefer my locally.com… but then I’m biased.

  9. 2011 November 9

    @Shaun: do you real.ly own locally.com? Congratulations.

  10. 2011 November 9

That’s a solid pay day for an .ly, I wonder how much bit.ly is worth

  11. 2011 November 9

I hope I can sell my only .ly domain for such good price.

    I own Ecofriend.ly

Congrats to both seller & buyer

  12. 2011 November 9

Friend.ly was acquired by Facebook last month.

Domain Hacks make no sence – that was expemlified 3-4 months back when I sold Minus.com to Min.us for $115K.
If ,in fact, a business actually starts operating (and VERY sucessfully) at Local.ly – then Locally.com becomes a real mid 6-figure gem – otherwise it is not even worth the $100K invested in Local.ly.

  14. 2011 November 9

Brian, you are pretty bias. If you would own significant portfolio in .LY – you would tell a different story. More and more people use hacks these days: bit.ly, about.me, sincere.ly, … do we have to continue? .com is losing the market share, slow.ly, but it does … sell, sell, sell … new TLDs are coming. Only catchy names will keep the value.

P.S. locally.com will be locally.com – but also pricier than local.ly – budget constraints matter often much too.

    @ .ly of course,
Sure – you can put quotes around anything “Bit.ly” or “Stupid.ly” on “Unbelievab.ly” (i.e. build any brand you want) but I do not have those kind of disposable ten of millions – therefore I reley on the intuitive .com.

“If you would own significant portfolio in .LY – you would tell a different story”
I would never own any of this stuff – other than a few for conversation on the fireplace mantle – and the very little stuff I once had – like Ci.gs is long long long gone.

That said given the history of the internet and how much adult has driven technology .xxx does have its place – but that is it.

  16. 2011 November 9

Very well. Our analysts watch Alexa top 1 million very close.ly and the number of .com in there is in decline. At the moment about 50% – but in decline. Considering there is little left in .com – I don’t see it reverted. Considering the prices, we invest in alternatives.

Hadi did a right thing by selling local.ly – it paid back for the entire portfolio or hundreds of names. The rest – is money well earned.

    @.LY Of Course!,
I have been a domain investor for 13+ years and owned over 25,000 unique .com’s and now have just over 6,000 – and believe me, the vast majority I did not sell – I just did not renew them – some actually get a few bucks off NJ folks tell me – but candidly I just get tired of looking at them.

The point being – sure .com’s might be consolidating dramatically – but not in favor of domain hacks like .ly, .me or whatever.

Look at it this way – how many cable channels do you really need ????

I got in on the tail end of reality 13 years ago – everything else is just a stroke

  18. 2011 November 9

The truth is that 80 million of domain names are .coms. The other 90 million and rising are non-coms. Many of them sell well. In a country like Poland – they don’t use .com, probably less than 1%.

.Com is only one side of the globe – many people make good money in the other half. Local.ly is just a good example.

Use it or don’t use it. But neglecting more than 50% of the market is another game. I rather no name it.

Now, if you excuse us, will get back to the business. Week.ly and instant.ly are good candidates for the next best sale.

There are many weeklies, but there is only one week.ly – it will never get shorter. Unless you convinced ICANN et al to delegate .weekly to you.

    @.LY Of Course!
There are late arriveing folks getting absolutely crusified in non.com’s in order for a few of the early birds to get out whole – or actually make some dough – especially the registries themselves that is not the world I live in – good luck in benefiting from the next refinancing, life insurance policy, inheritance, divorce settlement or whatever easy money money – nothing short of preditor.
    Best,

  20. 2011 November 9

It is good that most of the domainers still focus on .com.

    We can make money elsewhere:

    Business.Me went for 40k euro
    Watch.Me went for 20k euro
    Sponsor.Me went for 25k euro
    Inject.Me went for $27,000

So please go on with your preaching. In fact, there is no money to be made outside .com. No real.ly, nothing to go for .ly, .me, and alike. Not all. Only .com.

    Guys

Same argument we have all the time.

Its not a zero sum game where one extension wins at the loss of another.

Its an expansion of the domain name system which creates new additional opportunities.

.ly, .me .xxx .co are new opportunities.

.com’s continue to be great but its not the only game in town, the domain system has expanded you can’t stuff it back into a pure 100% .com world.

I fully agree with Mike. .com is king, nobody denies it, but it would be foolish to say .com is the only way to make money in domaining.

  24. 2011 November 10

BTW, Chad Hurley just reported on his Facebook the acquisition of Trunk.ly by AVOS:

  25. 2011 November 10

I think some people need to open their minds a bit. There are old games in town and new games in town. Some prefer the old games, some prefer the new. Some prefer both. But a word of caution. Get stuck in only playing the old games and your brain will go to mush. Look at me, I’m a perfect example. :o

  26. 2011 November 10

    Hey Mike B.,

The way you have written your full name now looks easily like “Esquire” could fit right on the end. No kiddin.

  27. 2011 November 10

I often use domains like bit.ly or ow.ly and I have in mind some good .ly names to register, but the current price of .ly domains (around $150) makes buy them not so convenient if you are not sure to USE or RESELL them

  28. 2011 November 10

The current price with Libyan Spider is $75. Yes, they don’t come cheap.ly.

There are about 10,000+ .ly registered.

Then again, .CO and .XXX were not cheap either.

  29. 2011 November 10

I remember I had to pay about $100 for .com back in 90′…

  30. 2011 November 10

    1. yes, $75 is a bit cheaper, but not so much to buy dozens domains

    2. I bought very few .CO only when they was discounted by GoDaddy

    3. never say never … but I doubt I’ll buy any .XXX not even if cheaper

Abdu, you’re right. I brokered this name. (it actually sold for more than $100k). Shaun, you know I tried to convince my client to go with locally.com but budget was a factor.
There are a couple of other notable .ly sales but I believe this is the biggest.

    Nice appreciation permalink

Seems .ly is getting expensive day by day.

Hey Braden, let me know if any one is interested in “Advert.ly”
    :D
