According to a report released yesterday by Hitwise, Bing is gaining some market share at the expense of Google.

Google’s market share for search in January was almost 68% down 2% from December.

On the other hand Bing.com and Bing-powered sites collectively rose by 6%, giving Microsoft’s search engine a 27.4% market share.

Bing.com by itself accounted for 12.8% of all searches, a 21% gain from December.

Searches conducted at Yahoo sites powered by Bing were down 4% at 14.6% of the market

Further, Bing and Yahoo combined outscored Google in January’s success rate, which indicates the number of search results that actually triggered a visit to a Web site.

For January Bing/Yahoo had a 81%  success rate, while Google success rate was only 65%.

how does real time search and description display factor into this though?

I think the goolge real time search of twitter and news articles as well as the amount of meta description of the site they display is superior to bing. My theory is that this, as well as widget-type functionality like embedded google plages and maps, may lead the user to the quick answer they were searching for without need to visit a website.

I guess I’m also asking whether click through is really the best measure of search engine value?

You might be right but the success rate is very interesting

I remember reading somewhere that portals experience more simple queries in searches, which may account for most of the difference in success rate.

Wonder as well how often Google is simply used as a spell checker.

If it is available, I’d like to see what the FaceBook search numbers look like – If they ever implement a truly intuitive search it could change patterns for everyone.
