TheStreet.com just published a post entitled 15 Tech Trends To Emerge By 2014.  While you will have to check out the entire article to see the full list but here are the highlights:

“Within two to three years, 25% to 35% of business users will employ a smartphone exclusively and abandon fixed-line phones.”

“Google Android will become a significant portion of the smartphone installed base, but won’t become dominant. It will capture a larger overall share than  iPhone and BlackBerry.”

Internet browsing will evolve from a browser as component of a higher level OS, to a browser as the primary function of the device. This “glass browser” model will become increasingly popular as more services move to the cloud”

“By 2013 Laptops will represent 65% to 75% of corporate PCs. However, by 2014 to 2015, we expect alternatives (e.g., tablets and “glass browsers” connected to the cloud) to reduce the total number of PC users in businesses by 20% to 25%, making it cost-effective for companies to deploy “lighter” mobile-computing devices to those users/functions who could not justify the cost or complexity of a PC.”
“Newtechnologies will come to smart devices like  voice command and control, biometrics input, motion detection, and adaptive response.

Within two to three years, users should expect to see a completely revamped means of interfacing with personal devices. This will lead to an explosion of new application capabilities as well as new usage scenarios that will require companies to adopt new interaction paradigms.

By 2014, social media will become as important as email to business users.

Solution vendors that do not adapt to the rising tide of cloud computing and software as a service for mobile users will face a significant market disadvantage by 2013 to 2014.

    More apps = negative domain name prices ? And/or what is the direct effect.

    Sorry guys, just trying to keep it real. I own and love domains myself.

    @Edward,

    Yes, I believe, in the aggregate, this does equate to lower domain prices going foward; however, the premium to ultra-premium domains should continue to appreciate on a year-over-year basis. IOW, the cream will rise to the top :)

    One thing *really* needs to be set straight here, since there’s a gigantic misconception that’s been accepted as fact in the domainer world.

    There’s a difference between “application software” and “web applications”. Either are referred to as “apps”, yet domainers seen to focus on application software for smartphones as being the sole matter of consideration, as it pertains to domain names.

    To put it in way domainers can understand… “Apps” doesn’t mean “smartphone widgets”. Youtube is a video app. Facebook is a social networking app. Ebay is an auction app. These are “web applications” – “apps”- and every one of them requires a domain name.

    Domainers think “app” and think stuff they can download from the Apple store for their iPhone. That would be an example of a smartphone app or “application software”- probably more appropriately termed a ‘smartphone widget’- but “apps” mean everything from websites we use every day to programs on our phones… Whoever is building the next great web application will want a great domain name to go with it.

    Stop thinking that “apps” means “smartphone widgets”. It doesn’t.
