Google Goes With GoogleInstant.Co, Doesn’t Own The .Com & Didn’t Bother Registering The .Me or .TV

2010 September 8
by Michael H. Berkens

Google announced  “Google Instant” feature on its search engine today but interestingly like Apple which only own iPad.co and not iPad.com, Google owns GoogleInstant.co but not the .com.

The .Com is owned by a Doctor in Brooklyn since 1999 but the domain is going to a Godaddy type lander so is in jeopardy of a UDRP.

In addition to the .Co, Google does own GoogleInstant.net and GoogleInstant.org.

GoogleInstant.tv and GoogleInstant.me are available as of publication which may say at lot for the .Co as opposed to these other ccTLD’s

Interesting that Google registered the .Co version but didn’t even bother to spend $20 to register the .TV or .Me

As predicted, the .CO is slowly overtaking the .COM.

.CO should has been the natural TLD for company. .COM in itself does not mean anything anymore, and is anyway already saturated for the end-users who don’t want to pay $200,000 for the “m” at the end of their domain.

I foresee .CO detractors crying on their mistake.

it wouldnt matter if GoogleInstant.com was going to a parked page, landing page, developed site or what. It is still a trademark violation since it contains the word Google in it. Doesnt matter if it was registered before this instant thing came along today. Having the word Google in any domain means the domain can be taken away from you and I am sure Google will win GoogleInstant.com soon.

  3. 2010 September 8

i forgot to mention, Google didnt go with GoogleInstant.co they went with Google.com/instant

@jim i dont see .co ever overtaking .com

They own GoogleInstant .co, they don’t own GoogleInstant.com nor did they even bother to register .tv or .me version

  5. 2010 September 8

Do they really need any of these extensions .. people are going to type in google.com, google.co.uk or whatever there country code is.

whether its googleinstant or googlecoffee they are all defensive registrations and nothing more.

  6. 2010 September 8

    Mike,

    great article indeed!

  7. 2010 September 8

GoogleInstant.co and .com are completely useless since they never can replace the shorter Google domains

  8. 2010 September 8

so, the unlucky GoogleInstant.com owner should give away for free his domain to Google?

  9. 2010 September 8

He doesn’t have to give it away, they will come and take it

  10. 2010 September 8

I think Google will clearly go after the .COM
The reason they own the .CO is probably more for the typo aspect I would think.

It is just one less headache down the road.

They do own the term in other extensions as well like .US

it’s time to push google to use g.co to launch it’s service more quickly.
by this way google can help to save lot more of our time.

    g.co = 4
    google.com = 10

guys @ cointernet : wake up! wake up!

  12. 2010 September 8

    @ kandyjet

Why would Google replace their domain? Google is their brand.

“G it” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Google it”

    @brad,

No brad, I mean what exactly overstock guys did with o.co. in other words, g.co could redirect to google.com. so saving typing time.

there is no doubt that Google is the most important “g” of the Web, so, why not assign this letter to it?

  15. 2010 September 8

Also, here’s another one that they will probably pursue:

    GoogleInstant.co.uk (registered since 2009)

  16. 2010 September 8

“G” is already known as an abbreviation for Google. What about Gmail?

  17. 2010 September 8

someday, the entire Web will have only one URL to digit… G

  18. 2010 September 8

Pretty soon they’ll also go after google-movie.com and other domains with google.

“Interesting…Lets see what the .co naysayers say about this”

They own the .CO clearly because they will soon also own the .COM

They own NET/ORG/US and others. I am not sure how owning .CO, especially as it is a typo, is some blockbuster news.

It is not like they are going to launch a website on .CO (unless it was related to Colombia). That would be big news if they did.

instant is the keyword. Names with instant are now more valuable. It will snowball other companies will follow with this type of search for products etc.

  22. 2010 September 8

    Joe,

Gmail was a registered trademark in Germany before Google had even launched its gmail

Anyway I feel comfortable investing in .CO domain names :)

  23. 2010 September 8

Though, some guys, with inside links sniffed around for instant domain names, instant.ly being one of them.

  24. 2010 September 8

This clearly puts .CO ahead of the .COM

It clearly is making the statement that getting the .CO is more important than getting the .COM

It also clearly marks a point where what some of you small people are saying, a major corporation or actually many major Internet titans are giving the green light or their nod to this entire .CO world space, some naysayers do not know a thing about what you are saying. And you will be left behind and made irrelevant.

Don’t be made irrelevant, get busy and buy some .CO s.

    Cheers.

google registereed googleinstant in all major ccTLDs, that doesn’t mean these ccTLDs will overtake .COM. It is a defensive registration, imho. Sooner or later google will go after the .COM.

  29. 2010 September 8

    @snicksnack,

you need to read before you start typing.

It says that Google didn’t bother to register .TV or .ME or anything else.

This bodes well for the .Co

  30. 2010 September 8

“This bodes well for the .Co”

not because they love the .co but only because .co could be used for the typosquatting of .com (that, clearly, Google wants to take soon)

Sweet Jesus McGee, these replies are tardapalooza. I swear to god, domaining is the one area to best witness large groups of people making catastrophic failures of logic, all in unison.

The reason Google bought the .co has absolutely nothing to do with the reason newbie ‘domainers’ are buying .co- as some sort of delusionally repurposed gTLD, ‘taking over’ .com.

They bought GoogleInstant.co for the same reason they bought GoogleInstant.pl, googleinstant.us, googleinstant.in, googleinstant.be, googleinstant.jp, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc… and they will wind up with that .com, too.

Do we have any wagers on Google funding an offline marketing campaign for GoogleInstant.co outside of Columbia? Any .co fans stepping up to take that bet? Because that’s basically the corollary you’re trying to establish when mashing up the notions of Google registering GoogleInstant.co with the larger future of .co as a repurposed gTLD… If this is to be meaningful within the spectrum of ‘.co domainer logic’, then we should see Google marketing and promoting this .co here in the US, right?

    LOL. Just LOL.

“They bought GoogleInstant.co for the same reason they bought GoogleInstant.pl, googleinstant.us, googleinstant.in, googleinstant.be, googleinstant.jp, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.”

    true, NO other reasons behind

  33. 2010 September 9

many hope that, someday, other TLDs will overcome the .com multi million$ value

that only since they have bought lots of .info .cc .ws (etc.) and (now) lots of .co domains

the .co surely do have/will have a value, but, clearly, not so much to overcome the .com ones

I think it’s best to invest on .us .eu .cn .in .asia and other domains with a large base of people rather than hope in a .co value’s explosion

  34. 2010 September 9

    @Robert Cline

maybe you check all other major ccTLDs and see that google has bothered registering them.

  35. 2010 September 9

    @LS Morgan,

Are you stalking me now? Stop following me from other boards where you have been suspended.

Here are at least a bunch where they have not bothered to register:

    GOOGLEINSTANT.MOBI
    GOOGLEINSTANT.BIZ
    GOOGLEINSTANT.WS
    GOOGLEINSTANT.COM.CO
    GOOGLEINSTANT.NET.CO
    GOOGLEINSTANT.NOM.CO
    GOOGLEINSTANT.ASIA
    GOOGLEINSTANT.BZ
    GOOGLEINSTANT.COM.MX

Had I been that interested in having the .com version, i would have made sure I had GoogleInstant.com before I actually launched the new search model. They didn’t bother to file for the .com long in advance, or thought it wasn’t important enough to wait to have it before the launch. It actually speaks volumes. Why would you wait til after the fact to acquire something that you thought was the most important thing ie the .com? Because they thought .co was sufficient.

    Brad,

The typo .co thing is now absolutely exhausted. I don’t see the point in constantly reiterating that non-fact. We all know now that the extension is not a typo and can stand by itself. The company has done a successful launch.

That’s true, but some obvioulsy biased people (mostly those who have missed the launch) will deny it.

I like the .co extension, but everytime now a company registers a .CO domain, you see post saying .CO takes over .COM, this is good news for .CO…. Reminds me of the .MOBI time, a couple of years back.

.CO is here to stay, but by no chance will it become more popular than .com, maybe except for Colombia.

.Co is an up and comer, the strongest CCTLD released in history.
Does anyone here actually purchase Domain Names?
If you do you would ahve heard that some .CO’s are auctioning at up to 50% of the .COM value.
    Hmmmm.
    I have 79 .Co’s and a few .COM’s
My portfolio is already calued at 150K + only at a conservative 4% value of .COM.
Watch the value rise, and watch .CO overtake .NET and .ORG.
I don’t think it will ever overtake .COM, let’s face it… .COM is a giant. I think .CO will certainly exceed a standard market value of at least 10% value of .COM.
To the people that got burnt with .ME, .COM and .TV… you got burnt, move along and move to the future before you get left behind.
