Pizza.net Hits the Auction Block At TRAFFIC Vancouver

MediaOptions.com announced today that they have been selected as the exclusive broker for the domain name, Pizza.net and that the domain will be auctioned off by RickLatona.com at TRAFFIC Vancouver

Expected auction reserve range looks to be $200K-$350K.

Here are some interesting tidbits about the domain, from MediaOptions:

·         In the 1995 award winning movie “The Net” starring Sandra Bullock, Pizza.net makes a guest appearance when Sandra Bullock orders a pizza from home directly on Pizza.net.  They even zoom in so Pizza.net takes up the entire screen!  You can watch it here.

·         Pizza.net  was the official online ordering service for Pizza Hut and Several other large Pizza Franchises.

·         Pizza.net  was one of the first (if not THE FIRST) E-Commerce site on the internet which allowed you to order something via SMS messaging.

·         Pizza.net was one of the first websites on the net to use a proximity search in order to locate relevant businesses in your area.

·         Pizza.net is still owned by the original registrant who established it in the early 90’s as one of the strongest internet brands out there at the time!

·         Pizza.net  was originally registered in 1992, making it one of the oldest domain names on the web.

·         In 1993 Pizza.net was built into an online business in partnership with the likes of Pizza Hut, Papaginos, Pepsi and several other major companies with a stake in the industry.

You might remember last year this domain hit the Godaddy.com auction platform where bidding quickly escalated to over $1M but the domain never sold.

Pizza.com of course was bought by National A-1 last year for a reported $1.8 million.

Sex.net sold for $450K and Porn.net sold for $400K.

Does that mean the site was so successful that even Pizza Hut, Papaginos, and Pepsi don’t want to buy it?

    No surprise permalink

Chris, did you quote such a low price just to cause a stir?

Even Valuate .com mechanically appraised it for $ 99k
    and the .com $ 9.2mil.

Nice! I’m thinking Chris is way wrong and it goes for $500k

Pizza.net is a very high quality domain and one of the major pizza franchises should have an interest in picking that up (if made aware). And why … why are people here making reference to a valuate.com appraisal. That’s disturbing, like referring to domaining as cybersquatting. It’s been shown to be invalid over and over. No automated appraisal can account for the proper variables and complex factors that go into a premium domain name valuation. Period.

    **************
No major franchise will ever switch from their established brand to pizza.net ,
Also no reputable advertising genius will ever advise to do so.
Now starting a new brand that is another story…
It reminds me of the “New Coke” fisco…

They might want to own the .com and forward the traffic a la Barnes and Noble / books.com.

(Any strong keyword) .net has lost it’s luster. It’s not the 2nd alternative outside the com like it used to be for many.

Hopefully, it will be a good sale, but personally I sold many .net’s 5-10 years ago and I can’t even get a lowball offer on some solid .net’s. Good luck to the seller of Pizza.net though.

    Thanks, Jim

That’s a valid point Domo. I don’t think giving up an established brand would make sense. That being said, there is some promotional and marketing value in such a pure domain as Pizza.net. More likely, an intermediary service could launch on it whereby pizza delivery restaurants pop up on a Pizza.net search (based on your locale) and you could see Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and other local pizza pub specials. Place your order, pay with credit card. Something like that.

Considering my portfolio contains the lion’s share of “Cheap??.com”‘s, I see that Cheap.org is in auction. If I were to pay $10 each for Cheap.org and Pizza.net, that $20 would be better spent at the movie theater – seriously.

pizza.net is awesome.. Try it out.

I think it goes for more then 500k, only because the owners of 4HotPizza.com turned down that much in the past. Although the 4HotPizza.com was tied to a phone number I think..

    Just my 2 cents.. :)

Check the web traffic for Dominos.com … pizza.net has value :)

As the saying goes – a sucker is born every day.
Just a Verisign is raising fees 7%, I will “safely” raise my offer for Pizza.net from $7.06 to $7.55 – and not have any regrets !!!

Branding a non.com like “Pizza.net” (who cares if it was in a movie) or “LarrysStupidNonComBlog.info” takes a lot of money – a lot more than a few mils.

What happened to all the self anoited domain geniuses promoting .mobi – did Mobi Dick get sent back out to sea.

@brianwick … value is in the eye of the beholder :)

  18. 2010 June 24

Forget the eye of the “Beholder”

    - actually the value in Pizza.net is only in the eye of the “Holder” of countless, useless, worthless non.com’s in their portfolio desparate to create market inorder to dump them to some other sucker.

All said this topic reassures me I made some correct decisions going into almost 13 years back

    - actually UDRP and ACPA helped me with those decisions establishing .com’s as the only one on the shelf – ask youself how many ACPA and UDRP cases exist where someone laid claim to a non.com who did not already own the .com ?
