The “4 Hour Work Week” Blog On The Value Of Buying A Great Domain & How To Do It

2009 March 1
by Michael H. Berkens

James Siminoff, a self proclaimed serial entrepreneur, published a guest post on the best selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek, Tim Ferriss blog, entitled How To Buy Domain Names Like A Pro.

The blog is widely read with over 183,000 month visitors according to compete.com.

Since many non-domainers will be reading this post (the post already has 40 comments) and since one of them maybe contacting you soon, to buy one of your domains, you need to understand what negotiating tips Mr. Siminoff is offering to his readers.

Mr. Siminoff said he has spent over $250,000 on over 200 domains, including PhoneTag.com and Grid.com.

Mr. Siminoff has a very positive view of domains if not domain holders

“”A great domain is extremely important to the success of a start-up”"

“”My overall rules for for domains are: They must be easy to spell, easy to say, and .com”"

On the other hand he calls parking pages “squatter pages” and doesn’t seem to hold domain owners in high regard.

It’s definitely an article you should check out.

… an’ I suppose he calls undeveloped land “squatters land.”

    Great article, though; thanks.

That reminds me of this blog posted a few days ago on this MMO blog: http://www.garryconn.com/how-to-make-money-online-selling-domain-names.php

I had tried to make a sensible comment there but he never let it post.

Anytime you put a link in your post, it has to be manually approved and will delay publication.

With all the spam posts and comments I get daily, I have no choice but to have such a system in place.

    MHB,
That’s ok. I was saying that the Gary Conn blog censored me when I tried to make a sensible comment on that post but obviously didn’t jive well with his money making operandi.

Mike I thought the same thing when I saw this post getting Retweeted like crazy on twitter. . this is a good opportunity to shed a positive light on domains to a massive audience. I was bummed too that he used the term squatter pages especially in reference to parking sites but I know where he was going, he just chose the wrong words. Too bad.

Im sorry if i am the only one that sees this but this whole article is extremely one sided. On top of that i think the writer is a horrible “domainer”. No disrespect but he paid WAY to much for grid.com. I don’t care about the generic nature of it or that is short, IMO it is a boring domain and makes zero to little sense of the product they are putting up.

The techniques that are explained are very basic and should be used in any negotiation whether it is real estate or buying a car.

“Squatter/Investor Pages” WTF?! obviously he has no idea of the domaining world and what a “Parking Page” is.

Everybody has thier own opinion on this topic but all I know is I never heard of phone tag until Mike wrote this article and it rocks. Just saved me about an hour every day checking voice mail and $1,000′s of dollars in international charges calling back to the US to check voice mail.

    Mike, thank you.

Some times we write about one thing and end up helping somebody out with another – thanks!
